Welcome to Highlands United Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville, Florida. We are an active and involved community of faith. The purpose of this site is to acquaint you with our church and the many different opportunities for you to give and receive ministry with us. We hope you will look inside Highlands Presbyterian Church, so that you may become more familiar with the many opportunities for worship, study, service, and fellowship. Please join us for Worship. Starting June 7, 2009 we will begin our summer Service schedule. The summer schedule has only one Service on Sunday. Sunday school will begin at 9am and the Worship Service will start at 10am. Prior to June 7 our regular Service are at 8:30am and 11:00am and Sunday School is at 9:45am..
History of the Presbyterian Church
Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Calvin did much of his writing from Geneva, Switzerland. From there, the Reformed movement spread to other parts of Europe and the British Isles. Many of the early Presbyterians in America came from England, Scotland and Ireland. The first American Presbytery was organized at Philadelphia in 1706. The first General Assembly was held in the same city in 1789. The first Assembly was convened by the Rev. John Witherspoon, the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence.
